Some people were very upset about full day kindergarten when it first came in. I also had great apprehension about whether it was developmentally appropriate for little ones. As time has passed though I have realized what a blessing it is. Time. Time to read. Time to sing. Time to talk. Time to discover. We had one of those moments on Friday. Eddie brought in a book about magnets. In the half day program we would have shared the book, looked at a couple of pages and answered a couple of questions then I would have moved on in a rush to get to the next learning outcome we needed to cover or, in most cases, headed home. Ahhhhh....but now we have the gift of time. We talked about what we knew, thought about what we wondered and pulled out all the magnet stuff Mrs. Farber had and discovered. What joy! What interest! What learning! These are the moments where the richest learning happens. When the ideas come from the students themselves and they direct what they want to learn. I am, but a bystander....documenting, asking questions and sharing in their excitement. These are the times that I truly LOVE my job!
